Today I would like to present to you the painting by Bartolomeo Manfredi named «Cupid Chastised» (or «Lo Sdegno di Marte»).
First, let’s start with some facts about the master. I wish I could tell you more, but since my time is very limited, I’ll try to say only relevant and brief information.
So, Manfredi is known as one of the greatest Caravaggisti. Although his artistic life was relatively short, it lasted only about fifteen years, he was a very successful master of his time.
He didn’t pursue public commisions, he worked only on private ones, and he never signed his works. Because of that many of his works were believed to be Caravaggio’s for a long period of time. For example, «Cupid Chastised», the painting I will be presenting, was identified as Manfredi’s only in 1943, which is quite recently.
This painting was commisioned Manfredi by Agostino Chigi through the assistance of Giulio Mancini. What is interesting, initially Chigi commisioned Caravaggio for this work, but Caravaggio’s version of «Lo Sdegno di Marte» ended up in the collection of Francesco Maria del Monte, who is known as Caravaggio’s patron and protector. Del Monte didn’t want this painting to be copied, so Chigi had to commision another artist, and Mancini suggested that Manfredi would be a good choice. Manfredi completed the painting in October 1613, and as for Caravaggio’s version, it is lost and we can assume that it doesn’t exist anymore.
So, the first thing that we notice is a remarkable work with light and dark, very Caravaggesque. Mars, god of war, beats Cupid for shooting an arrow into him and making him fall in love with Venus. This affair caused a lot of trouble for Mars and made him look ridiculous in the eyes of other gods. There’s also another hypothesis that Mars is mad and jealous because Cupid made Venus fall in love with Adonis. Anyway, the third person is Venus, who is begging Mars to have some mercy. In the right corner we can also see the birds. Dove is a symbol of Venus in Roman mythology, and from the myths we know that during the affair of Mars and Venus a couple of doves even prevented a war by making a nest in Mars' helmet. The helmet is also present in this painting, but we can see that it didn't work this time, and the doves have to fly away.
And Cupid's naked flesh, his broken bow and arrows and his position make him look even more vulnerable. This story apparently symbolizes the eternal conflict between love and war and also the idea that love can easily cause a great war.
And there is also another interpretation of what is happening in this scene. Here we have Cupid, who is blindfolded. So, we cannot look into his eyes and surely say that he is horrified by Mars’ actions. Moreover, his face expression here can be interpreted in completely another way, it’s possible that he is having pleasure. In other words, some believe that this painting has a homoerotic subtext. Even Giulio Mancini himself suspected that the painting could be rejected because of that. Also, if you look at Venus, who is half-naked and barechested, no one pays attention to her, even though she’s a goddess of beauty. But she doesn’t look like that, we can’t call her astonishingly beautiful. On the other hand, Cupid, who is usually painted as a little child or even a baby, here represented as a young attractive man, and Mars is completely into punishing him instead of paying attention to Venus. So, I found this alternative interpretation interesting enough to be mentioned.
As for the reasons why I chose this painting… It was very subjective and a bit personal. I’m not sure if this information relevant for our midterm work, but I used to be an anti-war activist in my country, a country that started a war this year. And now, being here, in Italy and far away from home, I fell a bit like this confused dove, who is forced to fly away. I know this sound very prretentious, but I wanted to show this painting because I feel that many of us in the room can relate to this dove as much as I do.
